A critical approach to building and growing your practice is finding ways to be as efficient as possible in how you see patients. This article will introduce three ways you can do so.

One of the first ways to practice more efficiently is by rounding.

First, find the most optimal times to round. This will provide you with the highest chance of continuously seeing as many patients as possible within a short period of time. You can achieve this goal by methodically analyzing the therapy schedule to determine when patients will either be in their room or in the therapy gym.

Based on this analysis, you can then determine blocks where patients most likely will be in their room so that you can round on them without interruption or needing to go to the gym to see them. Such interruptions and detours waste time and take you away from efficiently seeing patients.

The next way to practice more efficiently is by streamlining your documentation.

You can streamline your documentation by creating templates and pre-populated notes. This allows you to quickly document on patients without needing to recreate the wheel every single time. You want to make sure to structure your notes in such a way that you have all the elements needed to justify billing at the most appropriate level. This also helps provide a level of security in the event that you undergo chart audits.

The streamline of your documentation will allow you to save time in an area which normally is the most burdensome. So you want to create templates for as many daily situations as possible. This will include: daily progress notes, team conference notes, discharge summary notes, and summary rehab progress notes that tie everything together and summarize how the patient has been progressing in their therapy.

If you have a consult service, you want to create templates for the common rehab diagnosis that you will encounter while seeing consults. This will help you streamline this process to make you more efficient. Such templates include, but are not limited to, diagnoses such as:

  • stroke
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury
  • traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injury
  • multi-trauma
  • and debility

The third step is streamlining your billing process.

Create a system for billing which functions as shorthand. This allows you to easily communicate the level of encounter for each visit. When you do this, you can now teach this shorthand to an assistant. In turn, this allows them to perform this task and free you up to engage in other practice building activities.
