When building a profitable practice, you may have some preconceived notions that are holding you back. It’s important that you let these notions go so that you can move on and advance to the next level. We all have those nagging thoughts that creep up when you want to pursue a new career, build a profitable practice, or other personal or career goals. When you decide to grow personally or professionally, you may immediately stop as doubt moves in. Once you realize that these ideas are holding you back, you have everything you need to start your success journey. Preconceived notions hold you back from being the best you possible. They stop you from stepping out and taking needed risks. Your growth should not hinge on faulty views of yourself and your abilities. Instead, grasp the reality that you can attain any goal when you let go of your perceived notions.

Here are four perceived notions that are holding you back right now:

1. Lack of experience. How often have you let an opportunity pass you by because you didn’t feel like you had 100% of the requirements? How else will you gain experience if you don’t try? The willingness to learn is the best skill you can have to thwart any lack of experience. Go ahead and apply for the new position or take the leap into a new adventure and start that profitable practice on your own.

2. Lack of education. It all starts with comparing ourselves to others. You may look at a coworker who seems lightyears ahead of you in the intelligence arena. But in reality, they’re not. You might let your background affect your confidence and tell yourself that you don’t have the right degree. Many times, digging in and trudging through the trenches gives you more education than a college degree. You don’t need an MBA to start your own profitable practice.

3. Wrong time. You’re looking for the perfect time to start your blog, take up skydiving, or leave your employee position and start your own independent practice. You calculate and plan, but you never execute. You have the perfect business plan. Remember, the best time to start anything is now, because time will keep moving even if you’re standing still. You don’t want to look back a year from now and see that you have not made any progress.

4. Too much knowledge. If you believe you have reached the pinnacle of what you can learn, consider revisiting that idea. Knowledge is power. It can also keep you from growing as a person. Instead, look for new adventures to take you out of your comfort zone. You may find you still have a lot to learn. In my experience, doctors are individuals who feel that they know everything, and this in turn hurts them.

Embrace the path of continued growth when you ditch your preconceived notions.
