When building your profitable practice, it’s important to discipline yourself by resting daily. The Microsoft computer conglomerate was worth a staggering $2.135 trillion in late 2022. Co-founder Bill Gates stepped down from the Board of Directors of Microsoft in 2020 as the company he created continued to grow. He still plays an important role in guiding the company forward.

It’s hard to imagine a company worth more than 2,000 billion dollars, but that’s what Gates and co-founder Paul Allen have created. In the early days of Microsoft, Gates and Allen would burn the midnight oil. They were famous for working all hours of the day and night. Their toils paid off, and in 1987, Gates became the world’s youngest billionaire at the tender age of 31.

He continued to work long hours and expected this of his team. Allen also became a long-working disciple. The company was known for requiring the higher-ups to be able to report to work at a moment’s notice. A work-life-first, personal-life-second culture developed.

The former CEO of Microsoft is no spring chicken anymore. Even when he was younger and fond of doing nothing but working, he made a discovery. He found he was more productive when he took mid-day naps. He began sleeping at least seven hours every night.

Gates was surprised to find he was sharper, more creative, and upbeat most of the time, thanks to his dedication to resting his body and mind. He realized that all work and no downtime wasn’t the recipe for maximum productivity.

What Does Resting Mean to You?

While Gates napped during the day, his mind may have been performing complex computational equations. These days Bill Gates enjoys playing bridge as a form of relaxation. He frequently plays with legendary investor Warren Buffett.

The idea is to relax your mind and let your subconscious take over. Yours might take a look at problems in your life and try to solve them. Your subconscious does this when you take a nap or simply rest your mind. It kicks into high gear. When your conscious level of awareness drops significantly, your subconscious begins to work.

This is one of the reasons students are told to nap right after a vigorous study session. It helps them retain the knowledge they just absorbed. Incidentally, you get this boost of subconscious creativity and productivity regardless of how you define rest. Relax and enjoy rest frequently throughout the day, and you can improve the quality of your life.
