If you’ve ever stared at your EHR inbox at 10:43 p.m., wondering how you’re this exhausted, this credentialed, and still not financially free—you’re not alone.
I talk to brilliant physiatrists every week who know they’re capable of more. They’ve earned the degrees, mastered complex patient cases, and read every “how to build a practice” blog post out there.
But here’s the truth that often goes unspoken:
Intelligence doesn’t override subconscious beliefs.
In fact, your advanced education might be the very thing fueling your excuses.
Why Smart Physiatrists Still Self-Sabotage
Psychologists tell us that our core beliefs are formed by age seven. That means before you ever picked up a reflex hammer, your brain had already created the operating system you’ve likely been running ever since.
And that system may include subtle but damaging thoughts like:
- “I’m not good with money.”
- “Business is risky.”
- “I have to work harder, not smarter.”
- “I don’t have time to figure this out.”
The problem? These don’t feel like excuses. They feel like facts. And the smarter you are, the more you’re able to rationalize them.
But those internal narratives? They’re killing your business. Quietly and consistently.
The Dangerous Comfort of Excuses
When you say, “I’m just too busy to start my practice,” what you’re really saying is:
“My fear of the unknown feels safer than the possibility of freedom.”
It’s a tough pill to swallow, but I’ve swallowed it myself. I delayed my start, waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect tool, or the perfect EMR. That moment never came.
You don’t find the right time. You make it.
Break the Excuse Cycle: 4 Moves That Actually Work
1. Ask: What Can I Do?
Instead of dwelling on what you don’t have—whether it’s time, support, or clarity—ask yourself, “What’s one small action I can take right now?”
Email a virtual assistant. Outline your ideal patient avatar. Book a call. Micro-wins matter.
2. Find Evidence to the Contrary
If you’re convinced there’s no time, audit your day. Even 45 minutes reclaimed from perfectionism or social media can become five powerful hours each week to build your business.
3. Ask: “Will this belief help me or hurt me?”
The belief that you’re “not a business person” sounds harmless—until you realize it’s what’s keeping you employed instead of empowered.
4. Observe Without Judgment
Start viewing your own hesitation like you would a patient’s maladaptive behavior—clinically, with curiosity. Once you become aware of your internal stories, they begin to lose power. And from there, you can rewrite the script.
What You Really Need Isn’t More Information
You need activation.
Another CME course won’t build your practice. But a new way of thinking—and a mentor who’s walked this path—can.
That’s what I offer. Real strategy. Real support. Rooted in reality, not fluff.
If this post hit you hard, that’s a good sign. It means the part of you that knows you were made for more is waking up.
