The entrepreneurial mindset is a way of thinking and maneuvering. It’s about how you approach challenges, setbacks, mistakes, and even wins. It is about an inherent need to improve your skills and cultivate tenacity. The entrepreneurial mindset is what you need to drive yourself forward. There are several ways to tell if you have an entrepreneurial mindset. Consider these personality traits:

  • leadership qualities, including taking initiative
  • curiosity, creative thinking, and innovative ideas
  • a feeling that there’s something more than what you’re doing in your current practice
  • optimism
  • willing to take risks

If you show any or all of these qualities, you could very well be on your way to building your own independent practice because you do have the entrepreneurial spirit. Moreover, there are just as many ways to clear the road to become an entrepreneur. Have you ever thought about starting your own practice, but things get in your way?

How to clear the road towards entrepreneurial success:

Going from the 9-5 grind to the entrepreneurial spirit may not be the easiest path, but it is something you can achieve. However, there are several steps you need to take before forging headfirst into practice ownership.

Get clear. Getting clear on what you want to achieve is the integral first step. It is not as simple as coming up with an idea and writing it down, however. You have to write down your goals, but, even more importantly, you have to break them down. Being specific is not an option; it’s mandatory. You need to have clear, specific goals when it comes to starting your practice. The SMART acronym works brilliantly here in ensuring your goals are structured for success: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic/Relevant, and Time-Bound.

Create a practice plan. Once you’re clear on what your goal for your new practice is, you have to create a practice plan for success. Write down your goal, how you will achieve that goal in smaller steps, and then break that list down even further. Read my post about choosing the right business entity for your practice.

Take action. Next, it is time to take action steps. Action steps need more than just thinking when taking them. Declare aloud and to everyone you can where your action steps are. This way, you’re accountable to your word. Just as much as entrepreneurship involves independent and collaborative thinking and planning, it involves even more doing.

Delegate. If starting a new practice on your own, don’t be afraid to delegate tasks, even if you don’t have an office manager, business partner, or associates yet. One day delegating will be a task you will have to learn anyway. Allow family members and friends to help take the load off somewhere else while you learn all you need to know about starting your new practice.

Let go. Sometimes to create something new, we need to let go of something old. To clear the path to developing your practice, something else will have to fall by the wayside. Your home may become a little cluttered or less clean. You may have to let go of a favorite sport or activity for a while. But it’s well worth it at the end of the day. However, keeping your day job is essential until you are secure financially in your new practice endeavor.

The entrepreneurial mindset can get foggy as you get into the thick of practice ownership’s daily grind. But by making an effort to embody this mindset continuously, you position yourself to meet everyday challenges and actualize growth. It may be a difficult road to travel, but having an entrepreneurial mindset is a gift. Once you open it, you will be happy that you did.
