Physiatry practice support systems are critical to your practice’s success. The most vital practice support system is your family. The spousal relationship is particularly key to your ability to launch and operate a successful practice. If your spouse or significant other is against your practice, you miss a massive portion of your practice support system you need to sustain yourself. Running a small practice is a family affair. Whether your family thinks they are involved or not, they are. They are indeed the largest source of support your practice will get.

Impact of Negativity

If your family is negative about your practice, this influence will almost wipe out any other practice support systems you have in place. It’s going to be tough for the next couple of months while you get your practice off the ground.

Negativity will kill your practice faster than anything else. If you hear all day that “you’re no good, your practice is crappy, you’re ruining your life, you’re selfish…” you will go down a black hole with the rest of the practice support systems you so carefully put in place.

Impact of Positivity

If your family is positive about your practice, this influence will help you think positively, allowing you to have better coping skills, leading to increased resilience, and so on. Resilience can be defined as the ability to bounce back from adverse events by using positive emotions to cope. So it makes sense that having an increased ability to think positively would, in turn, increase your resilience. Positive emotions promote the discovery of novel and creative actions, ideas, and bonds. According to “Family Relationships and Well-Being,” published in National Center for Biotechnology Information, your family’s support (or lack thereof) not only affects your quality of production but your overall health as well. “For better and for worse, family relationships play a central role in shaping an individual’s well-being across the life course.”

The Bottom Line on Practice Support Systems

You need to have a positive practice support system, and the primary source of this support is your family. A robust, positive, encouraging practice support system will sustain you through the lows and temper you through the highs. If your family is not going to be supportive, the circumstances are not optimal for your launch. Despite all the other practice support systems you may have in place, your family trumps them all. Think seriously about how your family rates in your practice support system, then decide if now is the right time to start your practice.
