Living in the moment does not mean abandoning future plans. Think about something you did recently. It can be very mundane or something spectacular. Choose an activity, accomplishment, or life experience from last week or last month, or even yesterday. Make it recent enough so you can fully visualize the experience in your mind. It’s easy to remember the thoughts and feelings you had at that time. This moment is in your past however, you’ve lived it. That experience was in your present moment. That present moment in question now exists in your past. You can’t redo it or fix anything. You can’t change anything about it. It doesn’t exist because it’s nothing but a memory.

All your existence takes place in one long drawn out, present moment. That’s the time right now. An hour from now, that will be the present moment in time where you exist. You can use the past to help you prepare better for today and tomorrow and your future, but you can’t change your past. You also can’t change the future because it’s not available to you. While living in the present moment gives you the most honest and actionable life experience, you shouldn’t stop planning for the future. Your future and past are only a moment apart. We just talked about how your past is unchangeable. The same is true with your future. The only control you can take over your future is to use your time right now to plan for it.

Living in the present moment has plenty of rewards.

There are several emotional, mental and physical benefits of spending most of your time in the present. One of those benefits is creating better present moments in the future. It’s important to take some time and prepare for your future, even though it never really exists. All that happens is that some period in your future will slide into your present. If you live long enough, that’s when you can act and affect your future reality. In a split second, your future moves into the present and then immediately into your past. This split-second reality of your life existence being only available to you here and now, means it’s crucial for you to plan your future in the here and now.

That doesn’t mean you should spend every waking moment obsessed about your future life. Schedule time to plan for goal achievement. Think about the reality you want to create and then make a game plan to make that happen. This means using your past experiences to plan in the present moment for your future. Then when your future moves to right now, it can be as rewarding as possible.

What you think now can greatly affect your future. Check out our blog post here to find out how your thoughts affect your financial future.
