“Nurses can be your biggest enemy or your best friend, so do your best to make friends.” This is one of the best tips I was given as a med student and then again as an intern. This statement also rings true when building your business. Here’s why:

  • Of everyone in the healthcare system, nurses spend the most time with patients.
  • They advocate, and they educate.
  • They literally nurse patients back to health.
  • They see patients at their worst and as they begin to improve.
  • They treat their patients like family and, as a result, are most trusted by patients and families.

Nurses can serve as your strongest ally as you navigate the hospital system and market yourself to different providers in the healthcare community. They can help you form bonds with other physicians, serving as a bridge, and even performing introductions. This is why it’s so important to educate nurses on what you do, your role in the post-acute care continuum, and how you can help patients.

Nurses can serve as the loudest voice, advocating for you to care for the patient once they leave the hospital. Due to the large amount of time they spend with the patients and families at the bedside, nurses can:

  • educate them on all the benefits of acute in-patient rehabilitation
  • reinforce the need for post-acute care once the patient leaves the hospital
  • address all fears and misunderstandings
  • set and describe expectations for the patient once they get to acute in-patient rehabilitation

Once taught, nurses can serve as your newly trained rehab evangelist.

Bedside nurses and nurses, in general, can really help you increase your exposure and get you connected with other individuals in the hospital. However, their biggest role is with the patients and the families in getting them to feel more comfortable and at ease with the decision to go to acute in-patient rehabilitation if the patient isn’t quite ready to go home.

One of the biggest things you can do to help yourself and help your business grow is educating as many nurses as possible to help them understand acute in-patient rehabilitation, how it helps the patients and improves their function, and how it helps them become more independent and get back to their activities of daily living.

Nurses are a vital component in helping you expand because of their essential role in the healthcare system and how close they are to families and patients. There’s strength in numbers, and these individuals can go out into the healthcare system, really advocating for you and for the patients, which, in turn, can help you grow your business.
