Let’s be honest: most of us didn’t go to med school to become entrepreneurs. We went to heal, to serve, and—let’s face it—because we like our name followed by a few letters and a lot of respect. But here’s the gut-punch: the business of medicine doesn’t care how many degrees you have. If you don’t master the business side, it will master you.
Now here’s the good news: mastering the business of physiatry doesn’t require an MBA or 2 a.m. Google rabbit holes. What it does require is immersion. Borrowed straight from the skill mastery playbook, immersion is the prescription for becoming not just a better doctor—but a profitable, independent one.
The Prescription: Immersion is the Key to Business Mastery
1. Stimulate Your Senses: Engage Like Your Practice Depends on It (Because It Does)
Think about how you learned to read an MRI or perform an EMG. You didn’t just sit in a classroom—you watched, touched, asked, failed, adjusted, and tried again. That’s full-sensory learning. And guess what? That same approach works when learning to negotiate contracts, hire staff, market your practice, or understand your P&L sheet. The prescription for mastering business is the same: immerse yourself fully.
Don’t just read about business—live it. Sit in on billing calls. Shadow your practice manager. Listen to podcasts while you drive. Smell the stress (and success) of entrepreneurship. The more senses you involve, the faster you’ll learn—and the less terrifying it becomes.
2. Gamify Your Growth: Because You’re More Likely to Play Than Grind
Physiatrists are competitive, high-achieving, goal-oriented people—so why not use that to your advantage?
Set up challenges for yourself: • How many CPT codes can you accurately bill by the end of the week?
• Can you beat last month’s patient retention rate?
• Can you cut overhead by 5% this quarter?
Make it fun. Celebrate the wins. Reward yourself with a round of golf (or let’s be real—an uninterrupted nap). Business mastery doesn’t have to be boring. It should feel like leveling up in a game, not drowning in QuickBooks.
3. Use VR (Vision + Reality): See It Before You Scale It
You don’t need a headset to use this principle. Virtual reality is really about mentally placing yourself in the version of your practice you want to build. What does it look like? Smell like? What does your schedule feel like? Who’s around you?
Now reverse engineer that vision.
This kind of mental immersion isn’t fluffy—it’s strategy. When you emotionally connect to your “why,” your brain finds pathways to make it happen. Fear gives way to focus. Confusion becomes clarity. And burnout turns into breakthrough.
The Prescription for Thriving: Immersion in Business
If you’re tired of trading time for peanuts, overwhelmed by business jargon, and secretly scared you’re not “built” for entrepreneurship, I see you. I was you. But with immersive learning, mentorship, and mindset shifts—the prescription for success—I built a practice that serves me—not the other way around.
I help other physiatrists do the same. Because reclaiming the business of medicine starts with taking the first step toward immersing yourself in it. You’re not alone—and you’re more capable than you think. Let’s build the business that medicine forgot to teach you.
