When building a profitable practice, you must be present. You must live in the moment. You may ask yourself, ‘What does it mean to live in the present moment?’ Have you ever been urged to be more present? Has anyone ever told you there were significant emotional, mental, and even physical rewards for embracing the present moment? Since we’re on the subject, what does ‘live in the present moment’ mean? Aren’t you already existing right now without consciously focusing on that existence? Those are reasonable questions. If someone is urging you to engage in a practice you don’t understand, it makes sense to clear up your mind before you hop on the bandwagon.
What living in the present moment means is being fully aware and mindful of what is going on in your life this very moment.
It’s important because present moments only last a split second. The words you just read are already in your past. You can’t control or experience them in the past. It’s scary to think about, but our future is not guaranteed. All we have is the here and now.
Being present in the moment means no judgement or analysis.
You don’t manipulate the experience. Whatever you’re doing right now — checking out your Facebook feed, scrolling through Instagram, making dinner etc. — gets all your attention. You are centered in the here and now. When you think about it, there’s a lot of power in being present right now. It means you don’t have any distractions. If you’re blindly staring at your smartphone display while you’re hiking on a mountain, that distraction might have you walking off a cliff. Don’t pay attention while you’re driving, and any number of negative outcomes might be your reward.
For a little better understanding of the present moment experience, consider the words of author Myrko Thum. “The present moment is the only thing where there is no time.” It is the point between past and future. It is always there. And it is the only point we can access in time. Everything that happens, happens in the present moment. Everything that ever happened and will ever happen can only happen in the present moment. It is impossible for anything to exist outside of it. That’s incredibly powerful. It means that time is frozen in the present moment.
The second or millisecond or microsecond that is happening right now — all your achievements, your failures and successes, your wonderful and not so wonderful life experiences — are now happening. That means you have the most control over creating a beautiful life by paying full attention to the present moment. It’s the key to being happy and healthy. You get a better understanding of who you are, and a deeper appreciation of the people in your life.
You’ll find much less stress, anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions when you allow your mind and body to fully embrace the current moment in time. Slow down. Limit the amount of time you spend worrying about the future and ruminating about the past. They don’t really exist. Your entire life is lived in the present moment. Embrace that fact and recognize the truth of what’s going on right now to live a richer, more fulfilling life.
