When building a profitable practice, it’s important for your voice to be heard. If your voice isn’t being heard, maybe you’re speaking the wrong language. The most gifted linguists in the world will agree that the Basque language has them puzzled. Historians will tell you the same thing. While most languages have some overlap or can be traced to other languages, this is not true of Basque (also called Euskara).

It’s considered the world’s most well-known language isolate. That means it seems to have origins of its own. Studying it backward through time leads to an “out of the blue” beginning related to no other living language.

There is a comical tale that perfectly illustrates this point.

In this folktale, the devil decided that if he could learn the Euskara language, he could better understand which Basque people deserved to be sent to hell. After seven years of research and studying, the devil gave up.

This is a very difficult language because you can’t fall back on your understanding of another language. American English is a combination of languages, including but not limited to Latin, Dutch, French, British English, and Afrikaans.

If you have some history speaking those languages, then learning English isn’t that difficult. That’s certainly not the case with the Basque language.

What Does the Enigmatic Euskara Language Have To Do with Getting Your Voice Heard?

It’s all about speaking the language of your audience. Some people struggle to have their voices heard. It’s not that they’re shy about voicing their opinion. They just don’t know how to do so confidently, and in a way their audience can embrace. They might even have listeners who are very receptive to their message.

But as long as they use the wrong “language,” they may as well bespeaking Basque to most of the world.

What’s the message you’re trying to get across? Think about the benefits that come from taking your advice. Talk to different people in your audience. Ask them questions relevant to the topic you will be discussing.

In Other Words, Learn the Language of Your Audience

You can profess the many benefits of a meatless veggie burger to a carnivore until you’re blue in the face. Your voice isn’t going to have any impact. You aren’t speaking the right language. If you struggle to get your voice heard, it might be because you’re not saying the right things.

Take some time to get to know your audience. This is important if you need better performance from the workers under your charge. It can help you improve the important relationships in your life. Your self-esteem grows when your voice is finally heard and acted upon.

Perhaps all you need to do to be seen as speaking with more power and confidence is to change your language. Find a way to connect with your audience. Get to know them, what drives them, how they talk, and the words and phrases that make them listen. Then use the language of your audience to get the best results when you speak.

It can be hard to win people over and influence others if you’re not speaking their language. Check out our blog post here for some tips on winning friends and strengthening your influence.
